Everyone is talking about the digital transformation.
Sounds good.
But what does that mean?
We, the New Social Media Action Alliance, understand it to mean the use of sustainable platforms that promote democracy.
But sometimes it's not easy to get there. Some people are willing but don't have the confidence to make the transition. That's why we're giving some tips on how to get started with Mastodon (the die-hard Mastodont already knows all of the following).
It starts with downloading the Mastodon app from the app store: it is quickly found, downloaded and installed from the two major providers.
After starting it, you have to enter your email address and the instance where the account should be located.
This initially strange request is due to the decentralized structure of Mastodon. There is not one large central server, but many different small ones, which are called instances.
Those who register with Mastodon for the very first time usually want to see what it's like and register with one of the regional servers and a good list can be found here: joinmastodon.org/en/servers
If it later appears that the right server was not chosen at the first attempt, this is not a problem. Because you can switch to another server at any time (taking all active and passive followers with you). So don't worry about the server selection: just start.
